PROFESSOR PIYADASA RATNAYAKE

Professor Piyadasa Ratnayake is a distinguished scholar in the field of economics with a remarkable academic career spanning several decades. He has served as a Professor of Economics at Saga University in Japan, where he is now honored as Professor Emeritus.

Professor Ratnayake’s academic journey began with a B.A. in Economics with second class (Upper Division) honors from the University of Sri Lanka, Vidyodaya Campus (now the University of Sri Jayewardenepura) in Nugegoda, Sri Lanka, in 1978. He further advanced his expertise with an MSc in Agricultural Economics from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1985, and later earned a PhD in Economics from Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Japan, in 1990.

Throughout his career, Professor Ratnayake has made significant contributions to the field of economics, with a particular focus on agricultural economics. His research, teaching, and publications have been widely recognized and respected in academic circles. As an emeritus professor, he continues to inspire and mentor the next generation of economists.

As part of the specialized education offered by the Faculty of Economics, the purpose of this program is to deepen understanding of social scientific methodologies through the experience of empirical analysis, as well as to think about the various aspects of the globalizing international society from multiple perspectives and actively engage in them. The aim is to develop the qualities of a capable citizen.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF EDUCATION

  1. More than 400 Japanese students at Saga University dispatched its linked universities in foreign countries (short-term/long-term) for their undergraduate and postgraduate studies during the period 2000-2016.
  2. Arranged to sign an academic agreement (MOU) between Saga University and the University of Peradeniya in 1999. This contributes to accepting more than 100 Sri Lankan students from the University of Peradeniya to undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Saga University on Japanese government scholarships.
  3. Conducted Joint Lectures at Saga University as well as in Asian-linked universities exchanging staff members of those universities.
  4. Staff exchange program between linked universities.

The following symposium, called “Nikkanchu Kokusai Symposium (Japan-Korea-China International Symposium),” was commenced in 1990 by the Faculty of Economics at Saga University with the collaboration of Chonnam National University in South Korea, the Institute of World Economy and Politics, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Kasetsart University in Thailand and the University of Peradeniya have also joined the symposium since 2013. Now it is called the Asian Economic Symposium. I played a major role in organizing this symposium from 1990 to 2017.
